Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

97 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department has secured a site for the provision of a new school at Johnstown, Navan, County Meath where there are 1,200 new families living; when work will commence; and if it is envisaged that temporary accommodation will be provided for September 2002 as previously promised. [9207/02]

Arising from a review of primary school provision in the Navan area, my Department has identified a need for additional provision in the Johnstown area, in view of the extent and pace of residential development taking place there. Accordingly, it is proposed to request Meath County Council to reserve a site in that area for additional primary school provision. However, no capital funds will be committed to the acquisition of a site or the provision of accommodation until my Department is satisfied that any school estab lished in the area is likely to be viable and operated in a satisfactory manner.

My Department is currently examining an application from the patron body, Educate Together, for the development of a new multidenominational school in Navan, to commence operation in September 2002.
