Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farm Statistics.

Jim Higgins

Question:

105 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Taoiseach the number of full-time and part-time farmers in Counties Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo in 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 2000. [8738/02]

The precise information requested by the Deputy is not available. The farm structure survey provides information on the number of farms with over one hectare of land farmed and a breakdown of the number of full-time and part-time farmers is also available. In this context, full-time means farmers whose sole occupation is farming; those who answered that farming was either a major or subsidiary occupation are classified as part-time.

The relevant farm structure survey figures, starting with the 1991 census of agriculture, are set out in the following table. Earlier farm structure survey figures are not directly comparable with these.
