Vol. 550 No. 5

Written Answers. - Industrial Action.

Alan Shatter

Question:

159 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the position concerning industrial action being taken by probation officers attached to the Probation and Welfare Service; and the action taken by him to date to resolve this dispute. [9671/02]

My Department has been involved in discussions with the union which represents the probation and welfare staff involved in the industrial action referred to by the Deputy. While it would be inappropriate for me to go into details of an on going industrial relations matter, I understand that proposals for resolution of the issues which led to industrial action have been put to the union which is now balloting on the proposals.

I can inform the Deputy that the industrial action by staff at the forensic science laboratory has been deferred while staff consider proposals made by my Department regarding the implementation of the recommendations contained in the consultant's report in relation to staffing and other matters at the laboratory.
