Vol. 550 No. 5

Written Answers. - Company Closures.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

41 Mr. Quinn asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if, in regard to the announcement of the planned closure of a company (details supplied) in Ringsend, Dublin 4 with the loss of 375 jobs, she will use the powers available to her under the Protection of Employment Act, 1977 to require the company to enter into discussions with her on the proposed redundancies; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9460/02]

Under the Protection of Employment Act, 1977, an employer is required to notify my Department if it intends to introduce collective redundancies in the company. A notification of collective redundancy was received from the company on 28 February 2002 in which it was indicated that the proposed closure of the company would result in 375 employees being made redundant. Following the usual practice is such cases, my Department notified the State training authority, FÁS, of the redundancy situation as it pertains in this company, for any action/attention the agency considered necessary.

Management commenced the consultative process for the closure of the plant in early March. The Labour Relations Commission is continuing to work with the parties. I understand that the talks are ongoing and that some progress has been made.
