Dáil Éireann debate -
Tuesday, 26 Mar 2002

Vol. 551 No. 2

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of notices under Standing Order 31 dealing with two different topics. I propose to deal with these topics separately and I will now call on Deputy Brian Hayes.

I request that Dáil Éireann be adjourned to discuss the following matter of public importance, namely, the need for the Taoiseach to establish as a matter of urgency an inquiry into certain allegations made in a recent newspaper in which it was alleged that a senior political adviser in his Department attempted to intervene in a planning matter in north County Dublin in 1998, a full disclosure of the facts in this case, and that the matter be discussed.

I request that Dáil Éireann be adjourned to hear a statement from the Taoiseach explaining on whose authority his senior adviser at the time phoned Fianna Fáil councillors and Deputies in Fingal County Council from the Taoiseach's office to seek support for the rezoning of Santry woods on behalf of a developer who is set to profit hugely from that decision at the expense of the wider community which loses large tracts of amenity woodland, all too rare on the northside of Dublin.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31. In regard to the second topic, I have received notice from Deputy Flanagan and I call on him to state the matter.

I seek the adjournment of the Dáil to debate the following matter of urgent national importance, namely, the report of the Attorney General into the national aquatic centre at Abbotstown and the need for a full debate in the plenary session of Dáil Éireann.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be contemplated by Standing Order 31.
