Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Insurance Costs.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

94 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the position in relation to the expected report on car insurance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9833/02]

I recently received a briefing from the Motor Insurance Advisory Board chairperson, backed up with a proposed final draft of the report. I noted the progress made and the chair's plans to bring the matter to a speedy conclusion. Subsequent to my meeting with the chairperson, the board formally ratified the final text and the report has now been sent for printing. I will give urgent consideration to the best way of advancing the MIAB's recommendations when I receive the final printed report.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

95 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on the impediments that the high rates of car insurance have on people taking up employment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9834/02]

I am aware of the high rates of car insurance and the difficulties they create, particularly for young people. However, the pricing and underwriting of insurance is a matter for individual insurance companies and European Union law prevents me or our Department from intervening in relation to the matter of premium levels or in respect of what risks insurance companies are prepared to underwrite.

High rates of car insurance may present difficulties, particularly for some young people who might be considering buying a car for the purpose of transport to a place of employment. However, in many cases it may be possible for people to overcome those difficulties by availing of alternative means of transport or by making arrangements with colleagues to share available space in vehicles travelling to the particular location.

The work of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board included an examination of the cost of motor insurance for young people. The board has finalised its report and arrangements for its printing and subsequent publication are now being made. I will give urgent consideration to the best way of advancing the MIAB's recommendations when I receive the final printed report.
