Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Diplomatic Representation.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

143 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the countries or international organisations with which the Government has diplomatic relations but in respect of which there is no resident Irish mission; the number of other members of the EU which have resident missions to the country or organisation in each case; if consideration has been given to establishing a resident mission in each case; the outcome of such consideration; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9784/02]

Ireland has 50 embassies, five multilateral missions and 11 consulates general and other offices abroad. The following list details the countries and international organisations with which the Government has diplomatic relations at present. Information relating to the number of other members of the EU which have resident missions to each country or organisation is not readily available. The spread of resident Irish missions abroad is considered by the Government on an ongoing basis, but as the Deputy will appreciate constraints on Government expenditure and the limits on the resources available for opening new missions require that any expansion of our diplomatic network must be incremental and be based on a thorough assessment of the costs and benefits involved. In 2001, new embassies were opened in a number of countries which have applied to join the EU – Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus and Estonia. A resident mission was also opened in Brazil.
