Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Higher Education Grants.

Michael Ring

Question:

241 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to introduce a top-up of the maintenance grant paid to student nurses, retrospectively, similar to the top-up grant paid through vocational education committees and county councils from the Department of Education and Science; if he will consider introducing such a top-up grant scheme for genuine hardship cases; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9698/02]

Nursing students on the pre-registration nursing diploma programmes receive an annual non-means tested maintenance grant of €4,533, as well as a range of other supports which are not available to other third level students. The current grant is almost double that of the higher edu cation means-tested grant and I have no plans to introduce a top-up grant to nursing students.
