Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Personal Assistance Services.

Richard Bruton

Question:

250 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his Department conducted an assessment of the availability of respite breaks for the parents of children with serious physical disability; if his Department has carried out an assessment of the needs of young people with a serious disability for personal assistance services; and his plans to develop these programmes. [9767/02]

My Department, in conjunction with the Health Research Board, the health boards and the voluntary sector service providers, is currently developing the national physical and sensory disability database. When complete, the database will provide a detailed picture of the service requirements, including the requirements for respite care and personal assistance services, for people with physical and sensory disabilities over a five year period. The database will assist in the discussions on the 2003 Estimates and will facilitate quality services to be planned and co-ordinated in the most efficient manner possible.

I would also like to point out that since coming into office, significant additional funding of just over €175 million has been provided for the maintenance and development of health related services, including respite care and personal assistance services, for people with physical and sensory disabilities. This level of funding is indicative of the Government's ongoing commitment to people with disabilities and I wish to assure the Deputy that the development of services in the sector will remain one of my priorities.
