Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Maternal Deaths.

Bernard Allen

Question:

263 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children if he has asked the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to investigate a new report from the UK which has found that suicide is the leading cause of maternal death in Britain. [9877/02]

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the report "Why Mothers Die 1997-1999", published by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in December 2001. This is one of an ongoing series of reports on maternal deaths in the United Kingdom. I have no plans to refer it specifically to the Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, as the contents of these reports are already known to the institute.
