Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Alan Shatter

Question:

510 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the principal of a school (details supplied) in County Clare was suspended in August 2001, that this person was previously on sick leave, and was certified fit to return to work on 7 May 2001, that the board of management did not allow the principal return because it claimed irregularities, that a rights commissioner adjudicated in favour of this person returning to work and to date this person has not been reinstated, that the unresolved issue is adversely affecting teachers and pupils in the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9887/02]

The appointment, suspension and dismissal of individual teachers employed in voluntary secondary schools are matters, in the first instance, for the authorities of the particular school concerned.

My Department is aware of the case referred to by the Deputy and has recently written to the authorities of the school concerned seeking information in relation to the current position in the case.
