Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Schools Amalgamation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

521 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will purchase Farranferris College Cork from the Catholic Diocese of Cork and Ross and afterwards continue to operate the college as a second level college on the north side of Cork City. [10042/02]

St. Finbarr's College, Farranferris, is an all-boys secondary school, owned and operated by the Diocese of Cork and Ross. Any decision with regard to the future of the school, including the sale of the school property, is a matter in the first instance for the trustees.

The planning section of my Department is currently examining a proposal submitted by the trustees of St. Finbarr's College and North Monastery secondary school for the amalgamation of these two schools into a single school. As part of this process, a technical assessment of each of the existing school buildings is being carried out to assess their suitability to accommodate a single school development.
