Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Ring

Question:

526 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science if a third teacher will be appointed to a primary school (details supplied) in County Mayo for September 2002, in either a temporary or permanent capacity. [10047/02]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on the 30 September of the previous school year. The number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners. The enrolment at the school referred to by the Deputy on the 30 September 2001 was 49 pupils, which will entitle the school to a staffing of a principal and one mainstream class teacher for the 2002-03 school year. A valid enrolment of 50 pupils on 30 September 2001 was required for the appointment of the second mainstream class teacher for the 2002-03 school year. I have arranged for an inspector of my Department to visit the school to assess the situation and report directly to me.
