Emmet Stagg

Question:

556 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if the contract has been signed for the required extension to Scoil Dara secondary school, Kilcock, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10173/02]

The project for the provision of an extension at Scoil Dara, Kilcock, County Kildare commenced on site recently and the contract period is twelve months. As the school authority is the client in this instance, the formal signing of the contract will be a matter between the school and the successful tenderer.

Question:

557 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will authorise the commencement of the detailed design stage for the required extension to Maynooth post-primary school, Maynooth, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10174/02]

The stage three, developed sketch scheme, has been examined by my Department's post-primary building unit. A number of queries have arisen and these have been brought to the attention of the chief executive officer of County Kildare VEC for evaluation and a response from his design team. Subject to a satisfactory response, the question of authorising the project to stage four, detailed design, will be considered.

Question:

558 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science when urgently needed construction work will start for a school (details supplied) in Dublin 12. [10179/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. In view of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The school referred to by the Deputy is being extended and refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.
