Vol. 551 No. 2

Written Answers. - Fisheries Protection.

Question:

55 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the steps being taken to ensure the safety of Irish shellfish, having regard to reports that Irish oysters are being blamed for an outbreak of the winter vomiting virus in Hong Kong; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9900/02]

Following alleged association between an outbreak of illness in Hong Kong and a batch of Irish oysters the production area in question has been closed under a prohibition order by my Department. Shellfish samples from a range of sampling points in the area are being taken on a regular basis and microbiological and viral testing is ongoing. Investigations are continuing.
