Vol. 551 No. 3

Written Answers. - Public Health Matters.

Brian Hayes

Question:

229 Mr. B. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science the procedures in place where it emerges that some or all children in a school are infested with head lice; if this problem has increased in recent years; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10370/02]

The director of community care and medical officer of health is the appropriate person to decide on matters of public health. The management authorities of primary schools were advised of this by Department circular 28/94. Guidelines for dealing with this problem may be obtained from the health promotion unit in the Department of Health and Children. It is also open to school authorities to invite a public health nurse, through the Department of Health and Children, to contact and visit the school regarding the problem of head lice.
