Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 27 Mar 2002

Vol. 551 No. 3

Request to move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 31.

Before coming to the Order of Business, I propose to deal with a number of related notices under Standing Order 31 from Deputies Flanagan and Sargent. I propose to call on the Deputies in the order in which they submitted their notices to my office. I call Deputy Flanagan to state the matter.

I hereby give you notice of my intention under Standing Order 31 to seek the adjournment of the Dáil to debate the following matter of urgent national importance, namely, the report of the Attorney General into the National Aquatic Centre at Abbotstown and the need for a full debate in a plenary session of Dáil Éireann.

I now call Deputy Sargent.

I request that Dáil Éireann be adjourned under Standing Order 31 to hear a statement from the Taoiseach as to why a signal was given by him to cut corners in the aquatic centre project by appointing Mr. Paddy Teahon to the two positions of chairman and chief executive of Campus and Stadium Ireland Development and if the Taoiseach will acknowledge this as an error of judgment.

Having considered the matter fully, I do not consider it to be in accordance with Standing Order 31.

The Tánaiste is asking questions when she should be answering them.

I remind Members that the issue is before the Committee of Public Accounts again today and Members should not pre-empt the hearing of the committee in their remarks.

Will the Taoiseach appear before the committee?

It has been a long-standing ruling which was strictly observed at the committee's own request during the DIRT hearings.
