Vol. 551 No. 3

Written Answers. - National Census.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

19 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the arrangements made by the Central Statistics Office for the national census at the end of April 2002; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8940/02]

The reference date for census 2002 is Sunday 28 April. Recruitment of the temporary field staff who will conduct the enumeration is now at an advanced stage. The supervisory field force grades, consisting of five census liaison officers, 35 regional supervisors and 350 field supervisors, are already in place and fully trained. Successful candidates for the 4,000 enumerator positions are being contacted with a view to commencing the field operation on 27 March, following appropriate training. A public awareness campaign, incorporating television, radio, press and outdoor media, will begin on the same day.

The first phase of the field operation, which will run until census day, will involve the enumerators making contact with householders throughout the country and delivering blank census forms to them for completion on census day. The second phase of the field operation will start on Monday, 29 April and will involve the collection of completed census forms. This is planned to conclude by the end of May at which time all materials will be returned to the Central Statistics Office for processing. Preliminary results, which will be based on summary counts prepared by the enumerators, will be published before the end of July at the level of electoral division. The first set of final results should be available in the first half of 2003.
