Question:

41 Ms Shortall asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the reason a company (details supplied) in County Sligo which provides a vital service to young seriously disadvantaged children is being denied resources by FÁS; her views on whether this project offers excellent value for money for the taxpayer; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10726/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 37 and 41 together.

The granting of funding to individual projects is a day-to-day matter for FÁS as part of its responsibilities under the Labour Services Act, 1987. However, I am informed by FÁS that when it funded the third course run by this company, there were only three participants from the north-west region with the majority of participants mainly from the Dublin area. As the Dublin region has extensive drug rehabilitation projects supported and run by FÁS, including a number of equestrian type projects which would be willing to take additional people, FÁS has recommended that the clients involved should be referred to similar projects in the Dublin area.
