Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Nursing Staff.

John Bruton

Question:

286 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Health and Children the initiatives he will put in place for nurses already registered in one discipline, who have their diploma in nursing and are registered with An Bord Altranais, who wish to continue their training in another discipline but under the new degree regime will now have to return to full-time education to complete their post-graduate training; if he will initiate an exemption for those nurses who are already registered with An Bord Altranais who have completed their diplomas to reflect the training they have already completed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11110/02]

At present it is not possible for a nurse already registered in one discipline, for example, psychiatric nursing, to undertake a post-registration programme of study leading to registration as a general nurse. However, the provision of such programmes is being considered in the context of the ongoing development of continuing nurse education in conjunction with the introduction of the new nationwide four year undergraduate pre-registration nursing degree programme at the start of the next academic year, 2002-03.

Question No. 287 answered with Question No. 268.
