Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - National Health Strategy.

Bernard Allen

Question:

308 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the reason his Department has missed the deadline for publication of the national health information strategy which was scheduled for December 2001. [11226/02]

My Department has been engaged in the completion of the national health information strategy and an advanced draft of the report is now being considered and will soon be ready to be submitted to Government.

The overall approach to developing the strategy has been guided by a steering group comprising of representatives of my Department, the health boards and health organisations. A project team was responsible for co-ordinating the work and preparing the final draft of the strategy. I established a series of working groups to make recommendations on key themes that will inform the strategy, such as those relating to improved information for the consumers of health services, e-health, security and use of data. In addition, I initiated a wide ranging consultation process in relation to this strategy. This involved representatives of all of the key stakeholders as well as consultations with members of the public, staff of the health services, health boards and other agencies. As a result of the approach adopted by my Department, the national health information strategy will be a most valuable document that will help inform all aspects of the health services and in so doing, support the achievement of many of the aims of the health strategy.
