Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers.

Michael Ring

Question:

325 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Health and Children if he will instruct the Western Health Board to assess a person (details supplied) in County Mayo for a primary medical certificate and the mobility allowance; and when this person will be assessed. [11356/02]

The medical assessment for and granting of a primary medical certificate for the purpose of the disabled drivers and disabled passengers, tax concessions scheme is carried out by the senior area medical officer in the relevant health board. This function is to assist the Department of Finance which has statutory responsibility for the disabled drivers and disabled passengers tax concessions scheme.

Furthermore, the assessment of entitlement to, and payment of, the mobility allowance in any individual case is a matter for the relevant health board. Accordingly, the Deputy's question has been referred to the chief executive officer, Western Health Board with a request that she examine the query and reply directly to the Deputy as a matter of urgency.
