Question:

426 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government when a meeting of COMHAR, the national sustainable development partnership, will be held at which it is proposed to determine by lottery the members of COMHAR who will serve four year terms. [11037/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 424 to 426, inclusive, together.

In providing for the establishment and terms of reference of COMHAR, the Government determined the overall size of the partnership – 25 ordinary members, in addition to the chair, with the chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on the Environment and Local Government as anex officio member. Nominations are sought from a range of bodies across five pillars representing the State and public sectors, economic sectors, environmental NGOs, social and community NGOs and the professional and academic sectors. Provision was also made for the appointment of the COMHAR membership for a three-year term by the Minister for the Environment and Local Government.
I have received nominations for the period from February 2002 to 2005 and will very shortly issue letters of appointment in respect of the 25 ordinary members. To facilitate continuity between each period of appointment, as recommended by COMHAR, the terms of reference were amended for the new membership to enable ten members, two from each pillar, to serve for a term for four years. The four year terms will be decided by lottery at the first meeting of the partnership, which will take place as soon as possible following appointment.
