Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Library Projects.

Question:

467 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the funding available to local authorities to build new public libraries; if this covers the purchase of sites; and if he will consider an application from Dublin City Council to purchase a site (details supplied) in Drimnagh, Dublin 12. [12041/02]

Specific proposals to improve public library services are, in the first instance, a matter for library authorities. Under the public library capital expenditure programme, 2002-2004, grant-aid of €31,840,000 has been approved for public library projects. The capital grant may include site costs. These projects were approved for funding mainly on the basis of prioritised lists of library projects submitted to my Department by each library authority. As no application has been received from Dublin City Council for a library at Drimnagh, it is not included in the current programme.
