Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Architectural Heritage

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

506 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if her Department has allocated ?250,000 for repair work to Ballybunion Castle; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11433/02]

My Department is not in a position to allocate funding for repair work to Ballybunion Castle as it is owned by the local authority and its upkeep is therefore a matter for Kerry County Council. Under the national development plan, my Department's funding for conservation works is fully committed to those properties already in my care. I advise the Deputy, however, that the Heritage Council has made available a grant of €27,000 to Kerry County Council towards the conservation and restoration of the castle. I have also arranged for staff from my Department to give technical advice and assistance to Kerry County Council.
