Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Naturalisation Applications.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

554 Ms Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a person (details supplied) in Dublin 2 could be granted citizenship due to a work contract in Saudi Arabia and the requirement to travel between the two countries. [11435/02]

An application for a certificate of naturalisation from the person concerned was received in my Department on 23 April 2001, one of 1,427 applications received that year. Applications for certificates of naturalisation are generally dealt with in chronological order as this is deemed to be the fairest system for all applicants. The average processing time of such applications is approximately 15 months. The person's application is being processed at present and I understand that officials in the citizenship section of my Department will be writing to his legal representatives in the coming days to clarify some matters relating to the application. When I have reached a decision on the matter, both the applicant and the Deputy will be informed of the outcome. The person concerned has been granted refugee status and was issued with a travel document in accordance with section 4 of the Refugee Act, 1996 and Article 28 of the 1951 convention relating to the status of refugees.

Question No. 555 answered with Question No. 538.
