Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Garda Complaints Board.

Alan Shatter

Question:

592 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of complaints relating to the Garda Síochána presently awaiting determination by the Garda Complaints Board; and the number of such complaints outstanding which were first made in each of the past five years. [12074/02]

The latest figures available from the board reflect the position as at 31 December 2001. At that date there were a total of 775 complaints on hand. The age profile of these complaints is as follows:

Question:

593 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reason for the delay in the publication of the report of the Garda Complaints Board for 2000 and 2001; and when each report will be published. [12075/02]

The preparation of the annual reports is a matter for the Garda Complaints Board. The report for the year 2000 has just been submitted to me by the board. Arrangements are now being made by the board to have it translated into Irish and printed. When that process has been completed and in accordance with long-standing procedures, the report will be presented to the Government just before they are laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas and published. I understand from the board that the annual report for the year 2001 will also be submitted to me shortly.
