Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Alan Shatter

Question:

595 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of assaults causing harm reported to the Garda in 2001; the number of other assaults reported to the Garda in 2001; and the extent to which there were more such incidents in 2001 than 2000 in each case. [12077/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that as published in the annual report of An Garda Síochána, 2000, the number of assaults causing harm recorded by the Garda was 1,703, of which 1,326 were recorded as detected. I am further informed that proceedings were taken in respect of 8,422 cases of minor assault.

I understand that statistics for the year 2001 are currently unavailable, as they are undergoing a validating process. When completed, the statistics will be analysed and the completed report will be submitted to my Department.
