709 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department have been examining for some time an application for a computer from a person (details supplied) who requires this computer for educational attainment; the stage this application is currently at within his Department; if it is possible the person may not receive this assistance from his Department as they are not presently aligned with a primary school even though their autism precludes them from mainstream education; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department recently approved a funding allocation to facilitate the purchase of computer equipment for the pupil in question. My officials have been in contact with the family concerned in this regard.

Question:

710 Mr. Noonan asked the Minister for Education and Science if an outstanding payment in respect of costs incurred in educating a person (details supplied) is due to the parent in this case; if his Department have agreed that retrospective funding is the issue in this case; the reason for the delay in the issue of this funding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11395/02]

The application referred to by the Deputy is currently being considered by my Department. Meanwhile, arrangements have been put in place to issue a grant to facilitate the purchase of a computer to assist with the child's education. The parents have been advised accordingly. My Department's inspectorate has been in contact with the family concerned regarding a suitable education placement for the child. My Department has provided funding to the parents so that the child may avail of home tuition until a suitable place has been sourced. My officials will be in further contact with the parents shortly.
