Written Answers. - Personal Injuries Assessment Board.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

64 Mr. O'Shea asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her proposals to establish a personal injuries assessment board; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11189/02]

John Perry

Question:

77 Mr. Perry asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment when she will act on the recommendations of the McAuley Report, which recommends the establishment of a personal injuries board which should offer fast track, mediation and arbitration services to settle employers, public liability and motor policy personal injury claims as an alternative to the court process; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11624/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 64 and 77 together.

Following the Government's decision to establish a Personal Injuries Assessment Board, an interdepartmental implementation group was set up to progress the establishment of the board. The group has had 11 meetings to date.

The group is examining the legal implications, including what legislative changes, if any, will be necessary to establish the PIAB. The work also includes consideration of the structures and operational procedures for the board. This has taken longer than was previously envisaged. However, I understand that the group is working towards the completion of its examination and I await its report. When I receive the report, I will consider it as a matter of urgency and will bring proposals to Government.
