Vol. 552 No. 1

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Michael Ring

Question:

94 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will provide funding for coastal erosion at Murrivagh, Mulranny, Westport, County Mayo; if a request has been submitted by Mayo County Council seeking this funding; and if so, the date this request was received. [11753/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rest with the property owner, be that a private individual or a local authority. In October 2001 my Department wrote to all coastal local authorities inviting priority proposals for consideration in the context of the 2002 coast protection programme. Mayo County Council has not submitted a proposal to my Department in respect of coast protection works at Murrivagh, Mulranny, County Mayo. I understand that this area is held in private ownership – commonage.
