Vol. 552 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Ring

Question:

191 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when an extra teacher will be provided to Cloonliffen national school, Ballinrobe, County Mayo; when the extension to this school will be sanctioned; and the stage it is currently at. [12360/02]

The staffing of a primary school is determined by reference to the enrolment of the school on the 30 September of the previous school year. The actual number of mainstream posts sanctioned is determined by reference to a staffing schedule and is finalised for a particular year following discussions with the education partners.

The enrolment at the school referred to by the Deputy on the 30 September 2001 was 34 pupils which will entitle the school to a staffing of a principal and one mainstream class teacher for the 2002-03 school year. A valid enrolment of 50 pupils on the 30 September 2001 was required for the appointment of the second mainstream class teacher for the 2002-03 school year. Unfortunately it is not open to my Department to sanction the second mainstream class teaching post for the 2002-03 school year.

The primary building unit of my Department does not appear to have received an application for additional accommodation from Cloonliffen national school.
