Vol. 552 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Olivia Mitchell

Question:

197 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if funding has been approved for the rebuilding of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 14. [12366/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A new school building is being provided to replace the existing school referred to by the Deputy as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

Question:

198 Ms O. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if the design template regarding the provision of a sports hall at St. Tiernan's community school, Dundrum, to facilitate the application for planning permission can be made available. [12367/02]

The building unit of my Department is overseeing the preparation of a PE hall template for generic use in second level schools. Planning permission and fire officer certification have been received. It is hoped to finalise the remaining requirements for the template very shortly.
