Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

200 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science the reasons for the delay in the commencement of the sports hall project at Castleknock community college, Dublin 15; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that approval in principle was first granted in August 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12432/02]

A PE hall of 806m² is being provided at Castleknock community college as part of the Government's programme and is currently at stage one in architectural planning. It will continue to the next stage as soon as possible under the expanded building programme. At this early stage it is impossible to indicate when this project will commence on site.

Question:

201 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the delays in replacing the roof, the building of four classrooms, a library room, meeting rooms, storage rooms, facilities for a staff room, and toilets and so on at Cairde Scoil Thomáis, Castleknock, Dublin 15; the reasons for the delay; the status of this work in his Department's priorities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12433/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.
Scoil Thomáis, Castleknock, is being extended/refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the Government's expanded building programme.
