Vol. 552 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hyperbaric Facilities.

David Stanton

Question:

116 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the need to establish a number of decompression chambers here; if his attention has further been drawn to the request to the Government to support such chambers; the number of such chambers currently in use; the age of each such chamber; if the chamber is available to the public; his plans to support the establishment of further decompression chambers here; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12336/02]

I am not aware of any demands to provide a number of decompression chambers here. As far as the health services are concerned, there is a hyberbaric chamber at University College Hospital, Galway. There are proposals to upgrade that facility and the question of providing funding for this project is under consideration in the context of the capital funding available and the priority attached to the project by the Western Health Board. I might also mention that the Southern Health Board has made arrangements with the Naval Service for the use of a decompression chamber at Haulbowline Naval Service.
