Question:

138 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the expenditure to date in providing four prefabs at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath; and the breakdown of these costs regarding initial outlay and rent or lease costs as applicable. [12639/02]

Two double portacabins are being rented by St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath. Under the Department's rental scheme for the provision of temporary accommodation, the Department refunds 95% of the rental costs. Expenditure by my Department to date is as follows: initial outlay –€12,101; rental costs –€27,944; and total –€40,045.

Question:

139 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science the estimated expenditure on providing three additional prefabs for St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath; and the expected total cost of this project. [12640/02]

Question:

140 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if his Department will fund additional hard top play areas at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath, to compensate for the areas lost to accommodate additional prefabs. [12641/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 139 and 140 together.

It is not the practice of my Department to indicate in advance of obtaining tenders the estimated cost of a project. The Deputy will appreciate that to do so would compromise the tendering process.
An application for additional play area at St. Etchen's national school has been received and is currently being considered by my Department. The school authorities will be kept informed of developments.

Question:

141 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that, from September 2002, over 200 pupils at St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath, will be accommodated in prefabs; his views on whether this is appropriate, taking into account health and safety considerations; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12642/02]

Question:

142 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Education and Science if an application for a major extension to St. Etchen's national school, Kinnegad, County Westmeath, has been received by his Department; the date of this application; the progress to date on this project; and the reason sums of money are being expended on prefabs at this school rather than advancing the school extension. [12643/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 141 and 142 together.

A building project for additional accommodation at St. Etchen's national school is currently in architectural planning. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders as soon as possible under the expanded building programme. My Department is providing prefabs to address the short-term accommodation needs of the school.
