Appointment of Members of Government and Ministers of State.

I wish to announce, for the information of the Dáil,

(1) that, having informed the President that Dáil Éireann had approved my nomination of Deputies to be members of the Government, the President, on 6 June 2002, appointed them accordingly;

(2) that, on the same date, I nominated Deputy Harney to be the Tánaiste and assigned the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment to her;

(3) that, on the same date, I assigned the Departments of State to the other members of the Government as follows: the Department of Defence, Deputy Michael Smith; the Department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, Deputy Walsh; the Department of Finance, Deputy McCreevy; the Department of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Cowen; the Department of Education and Science, Deputy Dempsey; the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources, Deputy Dermot Ahern; the Department of Tourism, Sport and Recreation, Deputy O'Donoghue; the Department of Health and Children, Deputy Martin; the Department of Public Enterprise, Deputy Brennan; the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy McDowell; the Department of the Environment and Local Government, Deputy Cullen; the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, Deputy Éamon Ó Cuív; the Department of Social, Community and Family Affairs, Deputy Coughlan;

(4) that, on 6 June 2002, the President appointed Rory Brady, SC, as Attorney General;

(5) that, on the same date, the Government appointed Deputy Hanafin to be Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach, with special responsibility as Government Chief Whip and for the Information Society, and Deputy Roche to be Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach and at the Department of Foreign Affairs, with special responsibility for European Affairs;

(6) that, on 18 June 2002, the Government appointed, with effect from 19 June 2002, Deputy de Valera to be Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science, with special responsibility for adult education, youth affairs and educational disadvantage; Deputy McDaid to be Minister of State at the Department of Transport, with special responsibility for road traffic, including road haulage; Deputy Fahey to be Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, with special responsibility for labour affairs, including training; Deputy Treacy to be Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, with special responsibility for food and horticulture; Deputy O'Dea to be Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform, with special responsibility for equality issues, including disability issues; Deputy Tom Kitt to be Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, with special responsibility for overseas development and human rights; Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher to be Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government; Deputy Liam Aylward to be Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food, with special responsibility for animal health and welfare and customer service; Deputy John Browne to be Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources; Deputy Michael Ahern to be Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise Trade and Employment, with special responsibility for trade and commerce; Deputy Ivor Callely to be Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, with special responsibility for services for older people; Deputy Noel Ahern to be Minister of State at the Department of the Environment and Local Government, with special responsibility for housing and urban renewal, and at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, with special responsibility for drugs strategy and community affairs; Deputy Brian Lenihan to be Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and at the Department of Education and Science, with special responsibility for children; Deputy Tim O'Malley to be Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children, with special responsibility for disability and mental health services and food safety; and Deputy Tom Parlon to be Minister of State at the Department of Finance, with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works.

The Government has also appointed Deputy Mary Hanafin to be Minister of State at the Department of Defence.
