Vol. 553 No. 4

Ceisteanna – Questions.

On a point of order I wish to bring to the Ceann Comhairle's attention that there is not a quorum in the House there being fewer than 20 Members present.

That is definitely a call for a quorum but before calling it I should point out that there is a long-standing precedent in the House that a quorum is not called during Question Time because Question Time is an opportunity for Members in Opposition to ask the Minister questions and to elicit answers. A quorum call eats into the limited time for that purpose. Certainly, we will call the quorum if the Deputy wishes it.

On the basis of the Ceann Comhairle's enlightening reply I will comply with precedent of the House.
