Vol. 553 No. 4

Written Answers. - Purchase for Destruction Scheme.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

70 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if all carcasses arising from the beef destruction scheme have been permanently disposed of; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14191/02]

The bovine carcasses acquired during the purchase for destruction scheme operated by my Department in 2001 have all been rendered to meat and bonemeal. All hides have been processed at tanneries in Ireland and all tallow has been incinerated or used as fuel. A quantity of approximately 35,000 tonnes of MBM arising from this scheme is currently in store at a number of locations. Negotiations on contracts for the disposal of this meal through incineration abroad are at an advanced stage.

Question No. 71 answered with Question No. 17.
