Vol. 553 No. 4

Written Answers. - Departmental Appointments.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

79 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will report on the procedures followed in filling the post of deputy director in an institution (details supplied) in Dublin 11; if he has satisfied himself that proper procedures have been followed; and if this was not the case, the action he will take to address this matter. [14194/02]

The centre's board of management referred to by the Deputy has responsibility for managing the centre on behalf of my Department and this includes the recruitment, selection and appointment of staff.

The post of deputy director was filled by open competition. It was advertised in the media, internally at the centre and on the World Wide Web. The selection process was by competitive interview. Following this process a candidate was selected for the post and is due to begin work in the centre shortly. There is no obligation on an employer to advertise in any particular publications provided that the employer does not breach the provisions of the Employment Equality Act, 1998. There is no evidence that any persons have been excluded in a discriminatory manner from this appointment.
