Vol. 553 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

85 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the employment of a full-time co-ordinator for the student at risk care programme at a school (details supplied) in Dublin 24; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14228/02]

The student at risk programme in the school to which the Deputy refers received funding in 2000 under the fund for the development of targeted educational responses to certain children at risk. The purpose of this fund is to develop preventative and supportive programmes that are targeted at children and young people who are at risk of educational disadvantage and social exclusion. Commitments to funding under this fund are given for one year only and projects that receive funding are advised that no liabilities should be entered into which assume the availability of funding in future years.

Recently my Department announced the school completion programme. This school, together with its four feeder primary schools, has been invited to participate. The objective of the programme is to provide a range of interventions in areas of disadvantage that support the retention of young people in education. All the schools involved have been requested to come together with relevant local statutory, voluntary and community bodies, the city-county development board and the local drugs task force to form a management committee and to develop and submit a three year plan to tackle early school leaving in their area. This plan will form the basis for the allocation of funding. The management committee of the programme in the area could consider activities similar to those undertaken by the project in the school referred to by the Deputy as part of its plan.
