Question:

149 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of the teachers and parents of children attending St. Joseph's special school, Balrothery, Tallaght, Dublin 24; and if he will consider raising the specialised staffing quota at this school. [15142/02]

I am aware that the authorities of St. Joseph's special school, Balrothery, Tallaght, Dublin 24, have set up a working group to formulate proposals relating to the school. My Department will consider these proposals when they are submitted and my officials will be in further contact with the school authorities when this process has been completed.

Question:

150 Mr. Crowe asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the concerns of the principal, and parents of children attending Scoil Treasa national school, Ballycullen Avenue, Firhouse, Dublin 24, that the school has been refused sanction for a 15th assistant on a provisional basis in the academic year 2002-03 supposedly due to the fact that it will be one pupil short of the number required for the teacher allocation to include this 15th assistant; if his Department has considered the possible implications this will have on overcrowding; and if the school's request to be sanctioned for a 15th assistant will be examined. [15143/02]

The staffing of a national school for a particular school year is determined by the enrolment in the school on 30 September of the previous year. This is in accordance with an agreement on staffing entered into between the Government and the education partners.

The enrolment of this school on 30 September 2001 was 411 pupils which warrants a staffing of a principal and 14 mainstream class teachers for the 2002-03 school year. As the agreed appointment figure for the 15th mainstream class teacher is 412 pupils, I regret that there is no basis on which I may sanction a further temporary or permanent post at Scoil Treasa national school for the 2002-03 school year.
