Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Bernard Allen

Question:

178 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural Resources when funding will be made available to Cork County Council to deal with the problem of erosion of the dunes and beach at The Warren, Rosscarbery, County Cork. [14536/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rests with the property owner be that a private individual or a local authority. Cork County Council has submitted three proposals in relation to coast protection works at the Warren Strand for consideration by my Department. The total cost of the works is estimated at €570,000.

A foreshore lease was granted to Cork County Council, by my predecessor, to enable coast protection works to be carried out at the Warren Strand. The terms of the lease are being finalised at present.

The question of funding works at the Warren Strand will be considered if further Exchequer funding becomes available for coast protection works and if specific works at the Warren Strand could be ranked among national priorities for such funding.
