Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Departmental Staff.

Mary Upton

Question:

241 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Transport the steps he has taken to encourage members of staff in his Department to cycle to work; if his Department provides showering facilities; if his Department will supply cycle helmets to ensure safe cycling; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15259/02]

Staff in my Department are encouraged to use means of transport other than private car to travel to work. These means include public transport and cycling.

Cycling is encouraged as part of an ongoing campaign in my Department of healthy living and keeping fit. In addition, the annual "car free" day in the city is widely promoted throughout the Department.

While limited car-park spaces are available in the Department, unlimited parking spaces for bikes are provided. Shower facilities are available for all staff. I have no plans at present to provide cycle helmets for staff.
