Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Prison Medical Service.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

251 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if a person (details supplied) can be facilitated in their request for acupuncture for a back problem; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15223/02]

It is policy to provide prisoners with access to health care services on the same basis as would be available to persons covered by the general medical services scheme. Access to acupuncture services is not provided under the public health scheme and accordingly is not available to prisoners. The prisoner mentioned has been provided with full access to health services both within the prison and externally through referral by the prison doctor.
