Vol. 553 No. 7

Written Answers. - Communications Masts.

Arthur Morgan

Question:

273 Mr. Morgan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will reconsider his Department's directive to local authorities not to consider the health implications of mobile phone antennae in view of the recent study by a person (details supplied); and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15165/02]

In accordance with guidelines for planning authorities on telecommunications antennae and support structures issued by my Department in July 1996, health aspects of masts and base stations should be addressed by requiring operators, as part of their planning application, to furnish to the planning authority a statement of compliance with the International Radiation Protection Association guidelines.

As regards the report referred to by the question, my Department understands that this deals with the health effects of the use of mobile phone handsets rather than antennae.
