Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Dan Neville

Question:

144 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Transport the expenditure on road safety in 2000, 2001 and 2002. [17815/02]

Exchequer funding for road safety agencies under the aegis of my Department is set out in the following table:

2000

2001

2002

National Safety Council

1,202,442

2,484,877

2,575,000

Medical Bureau of Road Safety

1,565,587

1,771,284

1,728,000

National Roads Authority

12,590,000 (Expenditure)

14,131,000 (Expenditure)

10,318,000 (Allocation)

Total Expenditure

15,358,029

18,387,161

14,621,000

In addition to Exchequer funding, the Irish Insurance Federation contributes to the National Safety Council's budget and funding is also received from sponsorship sources.
In July 2001, I made additional funding available to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety and the National Safety Council. Some €507,895 was made available to the Medical Bureau of Road Safety bringing Exchequer funding to the MBRS for 2001 to €1,771,284.
An additional €444,408 was made available to the National Safety Council for public awareness activities in the road and fire safety areas. An additional €19,046 was paid to the Irish Rider Training Association through the NSC in December 2001. This funding, together with the additional €634,869 allocated in March of 2001, brought the total Exchequer allocation to the NSC for 2001 to €2,484,877.
The foregoing excludes expenditure by the Garda on the enforcement of road traffic law; such expenditure is a matter for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
