261 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of cars registered in the State in 1980 and 1990 and in the last year for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17646/02]

I assume the question refers to motor vehicle licensing. There were 734,371 private cars currently licensed – taxed – in the State at 31 December 1980 and 796,408 at 31 December 1990. The corresponding figure for 2001 is 1,384,704.
