Vol. 555 No. 1

Written Answers. - Electoral Regulations.

Bernard Allen

Question:

292 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the provisions which govern the exercise of the vote in an election by a person with an intellectual disability; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17680/02]

Electoral law provides that where an elector satisifies the presiding officer that he or she is unable to read or write to such an extent that he or she cannot vote without assistance, the voter may request that his or her ballot paper be marked by a companion. If such an elector does not wish to avail of the assistance of a companion, he or she can ask the presiding officer to mark the ballot paper in accordance with his or her instructions.
