Vol. 555 No. 2

Adjournment Debate. - Schools Building Projects.

John McGuinness

Question:

208 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science when a decision is likely in relation to an application for funding a building project at Duiske College, Graiguenamanagh, County Kilkenny; and if he will give the project priority status in view of its urgency. [18152/02]

The stage 4-5 submission, detail design/bill of quantities, was received recently from County Kilkenny VEC. The building unit of my Department has completed an examination of the submission. My Department's comments in this regard issued to the VEC on 1 October 2002 for onward referral to the project's design team. The matter will be progressed further when a revised submission is submitted.

The actual start date for the works will become clearer at stage 6, that is, tender action stage.

Joan Burton

Question:

209 Ms Burton asked the Minister for Education and Science the price paid for the site of the primary school, Mary Mother of Hope, at Littlepace, Castaheany, Clonee, County Dublin; the acreage acquired; the name of the vendors; when it is proposed to build a permanent school on the site; the cost of temporary buildings to date; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18158/02]

My Department purchased a three acre site at Littlepace, Castaheany, in July 2001. The site was purchased from Menolly Properties Ltd. and the purchase price was €2,095,067.83 – £1.65 million. Approximately €720,000 has been spent to date on the provision of temporary accommodation including associated site works.

Architectural planning for a permanent building project at Mary Mother of Hope national school is at an advanced stage. Decisions on projects proceeding to tender and construction are taken in the light of the annual allocation for primary school buildings, the financial commitments to be met and the priority to be afforded to individual projects.

Later this year, when a financial allocation has been made for the primary school building programme in the 2003 Estimates, I will be framing a further comprehensive programme of works that will proceed to construction and the school concerned will be one of those considered for inclusion in that programme.

My Department will be in contact with the schools concerned when the programme for 2003 is published.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

210 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in regard to the provision of new primary school facilities at Robertstown, Naas, County Kildare; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18182/02]

Architectural planning for a building project at Robertstown national school is at an advanced stage. Decisions on projects proceeding to tender and construction are taken in light of the annual allocation for primary school buildings, the financial commitments to be met and the priority to be afforded to individual projects.

My Department has an extensive primary school building programme for 2002 under way at present, details of which are available on my Department's website at www.education.ie. It is not envisaged that the proposed building project at Robertstown national school will proceed to construction in 2002.

Later this year, when a financial allocation has been made for the primary school building programme in the 2003 Estimates, I will be framing a further comprehensive programme of works that will proceed to construction and projects at an advanced stage of architectural planning will be considered for inclusion in that programme. My Department will be in contact with the schools concerned when the programme for 2003 is published.
